”Old lady” problems

I have to admit, when people tell me what they do, I immediately associate a couple of images and words to the job. I dread about what people think about when I tell them I’m a gynecologist.

Some smile. Some blush. Some are completely ecstatic.

No, it’s not all about STDs and Babies! But yes, it is almost always about the vagina.

The vagina is BIG NEWS in the modern world. Feminist have made it their goal, and even succeeded in getting the words VAGINA, VULVA, CLITORIS and FEMALE ORGASM out of the medical text books and all over social media. Women shouldn’t be ashamed anymore when discussing their personal problems, neither among themselves nor with men.

Tampon ads are getting more creative and seriously funny. Vaginal cremes are being advertised as any normal product.

It is liberating. Having womanly problems is normal. At any age.

How about leakage? Can we talk about leakage?

Sure, we can talk about our periods all day long, exchange stories and make jokes, but when it comes to urinary incontinence, women become self-conscious all of a sudden.

A lot of the women in menopause, often due to the lack of estrogen, experience loss of bladder control. Because they are ashamed to admit it, they do not share with their friends and do not seek professional help in time (that is what annoys me the most! all these poor women waste so much time before they seek treatment and go through years of unpleasantness).

Unlike the normal menstruation, this issue is a medical one, and truly affects the quality of life.

So why doesn’t the world take it seriously? Why are the advertisements for it so idiotic? It reminds me of Tampon ads from 40 Years ago.

I bet those are exactly the same lines they used when advertising for tooth paste. Just replace tampons with tooth paste.

Be precise! Modern ads say it how it is: you can go clubbing while you bleed, ‘cause it can accommodate your huge flow!

Check out these modern incontinence ads:

What is wrong with them?

  1. Why are they always casting young women, who probably never experienced this problem and who, by the way, act weird in front of the camera? I bet they would be more comfortable doing an ad for Coca-Cola. Maybe they should. They are making the women who are really suffering feel more awkward about it.
  2. Why aren’t they focusing on the problem? You leak. K? Here is a 1 minute ad about how perfect the design of our product is. Wow. I am one step away from buying that mattress! Oh, wait. They weren’t advertising for a mattress. Oh, and buddy, I think the main problem is that they lose pee from time to time, not that their bag is too small. Women are more than capable of buying a bigger bag.

This is awful. Magic trick? Really?: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PsGVtnjJWk

This one is a little bit better: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUsLuM45OgQ

This one is satisfactory: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r0LcGuJ7Vw

It does mention the symptoms more and how it impacts the woman’s life. Not perfect, but an improvement.

What is problematic, is that none mentions the possibility of reducing or stopping the symptoms. This is weird, because it is a medical condition which can be treated medically. If you have a toothache, you can try pain pills for a while, but you will have to go to the dentist eventually.

These women are in their late 40s, 50s, 60s. They are active and they really deserve more than wearing (expensive!) pads every day, for decades to come.

Incontinence is not like menstruating. You can get rid of incontinence right away!

These women can do physiotherapy to strengthen the pelvic floor, can take pills or can have various types of surgeries. Just ask the doctor.

Sanitary pads should be the last solution.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Even if you’re a young woman or a man, this issue impacts the life of someone you hold dear so it should interest you.
